This previous month, the IFMA World Workplace conference brought together dozens of market experts, hundreds of facility management professionals, and an impressive array of industry influencers to drive the conversation. The result? 3 days filled with valuable content, profitable new business connections, and fresh perspectives on the entire state of the industry.
Here are a few of the biggest takeaways that made #WWPHX19 one of the top conferences for the facilities management community:
Much to everyone’s delight, the conference took place in the great city of Phoenix, Arizona. Held in the heart of downtown, the show’s venue was the Phoenix Convention Center. This prime location made both hotel reservations and city experiences quite convenient for all those in attendance. From city events, outdoor recreation, sports and cultural history, this city did not hold back on entertainment options.
The full agenda offered an impressive lineup of highly qualified professionals in the facilities management space as well as influential business innovators with their eyes on emerging technologies. Although it’s difficult to identify the top sessions, a few speakers and their stories really stood out to the IFMA crowd. These included:
- Robyn Benincasa - Founder of World Class Teams, and World Champion Adventure Racer. As the opening keynote speaker, Benincasa began the conference with "How Winning Works". And rightfully so, as Benincasa is a three-time Guinness World Record Distance Paddler, a former sales expert, and a full-time firefighter. She also advises global organizations on how to build world-class teams, including Starbucks, Deloitte, Lockheed Martin, and Microsoft.
- Rex Miller – Author, Futurist, and Principal for MindShift. Miller covered the session called “Connecting the Dots to an Effective Wellness Strategy: HR, Facilities and Finance”. He discussed the growing health-cost crisis that organizations are experiencing, and spoke about the vital need to adopt a radically different approach. Both Miller and Mim Senft—President and CEO of Motivity Partners, Co-founder and CEO for Global Women 4 Wellbeing—shared strategies to improve this traditional model of workplace health.
- Peter Hinssen - Co-founder & Partner at nexxworks. Ending the conference as the closing keynote speaker, Hinssen’s session, "The Day After Tomorrow", talked about the rapidly changing world and its consequences for organizations. He also discussed radically new technologies while introducing pioneers who have transformed the digital space.
“As you enter the work force, be open-minded and learn all that you can. Approach every project with enthusiasm and do the very best you can. You will be noticed, and you will rise to the top!”
- Director, Planning, Design and Construction, West Region, AT&T
SOLUTIONS & EXHIBITORS
One of the unique factors of IFMA’s World Workplace is its expo floor. Different from other tradeshows, the exhibitions are built entirely for a facilities manager’s benefit. Most notably, the floor is transformed into goldmine of facility solutions, boasting new age technology, world-class user experiences, and innovative concepts.
2019 was no different, as every exhibitor had been hand-picked by the hosting association, and all displays and offerings needed to be approved beforehand. Although it is a very targeted selection process, the expo hall left nothing to be desired. With hundreds of vendors to connect with, there was a plethora of innovative tools, free giveaways, valuable resources and solutions that addressed every industry pain point.
For any organization experiencing challenges, and for any organization just curious what the newest cutting-edge technologies are, World Workplace’s options are endless. And for those businesses specifically looking to streamline manual processes and enhance workload efficiencies via a CMMS software platform, NETfacilities is the industry leading solution.
Another great advantage of attending IFMA is the Technology Track. Using a hands-on approach, software and apps led a full schedule of workshops provided to the delegates. With so many options and available solutions on the market today, the Technology Track allowed companies to get first-hand experience by taking these technologies for a spin. A few of the workshops included:
- Remote sensors
Also offered at this year’s event were actual facility tours. These real-life, in-person educational sessions took the monotony out of traditional lectures, and gave its viewers an inside look at systems, programs, sustainable/energy-efficient features and state-of-the-art upgrades.
NEXT YEAR’S CONFERENCE:
IFMA’s World Workplace in 2020 will bring big things. It marks the huge milestone of the show’s 40-year anniversary! As you should expect, it will be the event of the year for any Facility Manager to “Level Up” their career. So mark your calendar for September 30 through October 2 of 2020, and pack your bags for Chicago, Illinois!
